Day 191 | When I Live My Dream

I probably wouldn’t have posted this  nearly 50-year old song except that Heathrow Airport plucked it from obscurity as the soundtrack to its first ever commercial.  This almost certainly would not have happened a year ago.  Bowie’s passing has had such a profound impact that the childish lyrics actually become an asset because the voice is recognizably Bowie’s (in this respect it is different than the commercial that used “Starman,” a far more familiar song).  Bowie played around with this song in the 60s, plopping it into false starts like The World of David Bowie (a slightly repackaged version of his self-titled debut album) and in the Love You Til Tuesday soundtrack (which didn’t end up getting released until the 80s) and his manager at the time attempted to promote it as a potential breakout…but it just isn’t that great a song.  Still, it was out there.  Seu Jorge recorded a version, and now it comes back as a commercial.

Update (1/7/22): I am pretty sure the original video accompanying this post was the Heathrow commercial;.  That video is now down, but I found this (new?) “official” video of a very groovy Bowie singing the song in what looks like the 60s.  Austin Powers would be jealous.
