We can argue about Bowie’s best song. there are many contenders. It is an unanswerable question. But this is indisputably his absolute worst. This novelty song is so bad it is almost funny. It was supposed to be funny, but it isn’t in the intended way. I can imagine the pre-fame Bowie was desperate for any kind of commercial success and just threw a Hail Mary with this one. It didn’t connect. Bowie didn’t perform this song once he became well known, but he never forgot it existed. Linked is a more recent joke, “Requiem for a Laughing Gnome,” which is funnier.
