Day 342 | Like A Rolling Stone

Bowie teamed up with his old Spiders form Mars guitarist, Mick Ronson, for this Dylan cover shortly before Ronson died in the early 1990s.   Appropriately it is a guitar-heavy version, but Bowie is also fully committed to the song.  I’m not sure, but I think the choice of songs is a kind of an in-joke.  Bowie covered Dylan several times and even wrote a song about him, but Bowie and Ronson clearly admired the Rolling Stones  (they covered “Let’s Spend the Night Together,” made a Jagger reference in  “Drive in Saturday” and generally tried to hang out with the Stones in the early 70s.  So, while the song has nothing to do with the Rolling Stones, Bowie and Ronson may have been giving a wink toward their inspiration.  Album: Heaven and Hull (Mick Ronson album).
