Day 273 | Scream Like A Baby

This is a song I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to like.  While not on my top ten favorite list, it has long been in the conversation, but most reviews I have read are dismissive.  This is in part because the music is recycled from a truly silly song Bowie wrote for a band called the Astronettes, which seems to be a vanity project for Bowie’s then-girlfriend, Ava Cherry.  The Astronettes’ song, “I am A Laser,” has the same music but different, awful lyrics.  Bowie’s version is about how people out of step with conventional society feel oppressed and imprisoned.  The song paints a picture of a dystopian future where nonconformists are jailed.  Although the origins of the song come from the Diamond Dog period, or even earlier, where it would have fit, it totally fits in where it is.  Album: Scary Monsters
