By 1980 Bowie sneered at his imitators: “Same old thing, in brand new drag comes sweeping into view” (“Teenage Wildlife”). Nearly 20 years later he hooked up with an obscure band to imitate (parody, really) himself. The band itself explains that this song was kind of an homage to Ziggy, complete with space lyrics and the question “is your volume up” (the Ziggy album is famously labeled, “To be played at maximum volume.” I think the biggest joke within the song is that Bowie doesn’t seem to actually sing-his contribution is spoken word. The whole thing is not quite funny but answers the question, what would it have sounded like had Bowie actually been part of the band, “Spacehog.” Album: Viva Nueva (Rustic Overtones album)
