I once went to a Woody Allen movie with my father. The movie was so funny that, after it was over, my father said something along the lines of, “that guy should have to make a movie every year.” Not for the first time, my father was prophetic because that’s just about what Woody Allen does. I felt similar about Bowie. He didn’t even have to write his own songs, he should have to record songs as often as possible. There are a lot of good ones out there for him to do. And, sure enough, in addition to his massive catalogue of original music, he did enough covers to compete with some artists entire recorded output. This is an example of a good one that isn’t particularly well known. From the very early days of his career, Bowie was influenced by The Who. He included two Who covers on Pin Ups. This cover came much later, for a 2001 compilation of Who covers, apparently at the request of Pete Townshend. Album: Substitute: The Songs of The Who
