Day 214 | Thru’ Architects Eyes

Though not especially well known, this is one of my favorite songs on one of my favorite albums. Like most of the songs I like, I start here with how it sounds. There’s no point in describing the sound- listen to it and you’ll either like it or not. But if you do, there’s more here to dig into. Outside is a concept album about murder as art. This song supposedly has a place in the concept, though on its own there’s nothing to suggest anything like that. I think of the narrator as an architect who prefers buildings to people, sitting in a board room resenting his colleagues and daydreaming about both his work and his desire to kill the people who surround him. He does not act on his urges. So is he a patron of the art murders? That could fit. I never read The Fountainhead, but I imagine the song’s narrator to be a Howard Roark type, or maybe actually Howard Roark: an uncompromising individualist so sure of his vision to lack all human empathy. There’s still more: what’s with the title’s strange punctuation? I only recently noticed that- as with “Heroes” (the quotes are part of the title), I think there’s a reason, but unlike ” Heroes” I don’t have an idea what the reason is. So the song leaves more to the imagination, more reason to return to it. Album: 1. Outside
