DoM’s latest Bowie creation: “Modern Love: Reggae Version”

I am mostly familiar with the work of DoM as a mashup artist. He has the uncanny ability to match vocals from one song and music from a completely different song and make the result sound like it was always meant to be. “Modern Love Reggae Version” might be a little different in that I don’t recognize the music itself, but Bowie’s very familiar vocals sound absolutely at home here. I’m sharing this because, as is usually the case with DoM’s works, I both enjoy this and think that it’s, for lack of a better way of putting it — way cool!

This is not the first attempt at presenting Bowie in a reggae format. Last year I posted about a terrific reggae cover of the entire Ziggy Stardust album called, Ziggy Stardub by Easy Star All-Stars (click HERE to see what I wrote). That album is worth hearing on its own— DoM also took the reggae music and replaced the vocals with Bowie’s originals. I never posted that on my blog, but the overall impression I get is that Bowie seems to work as reggae. Perhaps ironically, Bowie’s actual, intentional foray into the genre, notably “Don’t Look Down” and some of what else is on Tonight, is not, how shall I say— not universally loved.

“Modern Love: Reggaea version” is the kind of thing that you might experience as fun even if you don’t like reggae, or, for that matter “Modern Love.” As I’ve written before, I have a kind of gee-whiz reaction to DoM’s ability to merge two pieces of music. This is another demonstration of his skill which on its own would be interesting in a detached way, but beyond that— it sounds great!
