Day 329 | God Bless the Girl

This is one of Bowie’s catchier later songs. He might have devoted energies to promoting it at an earlier point in his career. Instead it ended up on the mish-mash “Extra” album. But it shouldn’t be overlooked. Musically and lyrically the song conveys the march of time and the entropy that goes along with it. For a while I thought the subject matter was simply a woman’s work-a-day existence, but I think what Bowie is singing about is the obscure (but not made up) concept of sacred prostitution. The images for the excellent “The Next Day” video match this song better, but Bowie didn’t do a video for this song. But beyond all that it just sounds good. Album: The Next Day Extra
