Sadly, no, this isn’t actually David Bowie singing Elton John’s “Rocket Man.” It is comedian Stevie Riks (who might have also been the voice behind the recording of “Bowie” singing “My Way” that appears elsewhere in this blog). The parody impersonation is not spot-on, but it is mildly amusing. Riks is apparently trying to sound like Bowie at the very tail end of his career but, I think, is over-emphasizing the old man sound. Even in songs he recorded weeks before his death, the real Bowie didn’t sound as old as Riks is going for here.
The real reason I am posting this is because I actually saw a rocket in the sky a few nights ago and it was the coolest thing I have seen in a long time. I originally thought it was a shooting star coming down, but it turned out to be a SpaceX rocket that had blasted off from Cape Canaveral. The apparently downward motion was, I think, the rocket going around the world, finally out of view.
So to commemorate this, I wanted to find an alternate version of Bowie’s, “Like A Rocket Man,” but as far as I can tell, there is only one version of that song, and it has already made an appearance in this blog. I considered posting Elton John singing “Rocket Man” and commenting about its relationship (or lack of relationship) with “Space Oddity,” but came across this instead. Kind of funny, anyway.
