Some images I’ve referenced

In some recent posts I’ve mentioned a couple of images that I am reproducing here.  See the gallery for the album art for Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets,” and then, to eliminate any doubt about who the song is about, an image of Bowie that the art is clearly based upon.  Then see the cover art for Jobraith’s self-titled album, followed by the sleeve art of the fake Maxwell Demon album from the movie, “Velvet Goldmine,” followed by two images of album art from actual Bowie albums (“Diamond Dogs” and “Aladdin Sane.”  For good measure, I added an image of the two-panel Jobraith art, which seen this way is even more obviously inspired by the two-fold “Diamond Dogs” cover, in which the lower half of Bowie;s body is revealed to be…. something else.

I mentioned in a previous post that Bowie didn’t think highly of Jobraith (I have to agree with him there), but he also didn’t like, “Velvet Goldmine” (I did).  Take a look at the image— the actor is Jonathan Rhys Meyers.  In one of the interviews included in “Bowie on Bowie,” Bowie said, “The guy in that movie is supposed to be me, apparently.  I’ll tell you what…I thought he was charismatic as a glass of water.  I thought surely I’ve got more zing that that.  He was more Warhol than me being Warhol, that guy.  He was a good looking kid and all that and I thought, ‘Whoa, thank you.’ Obviously they didn’t see the teeth that I had back then.”
