Parálisis Permanente performs “Heroes” in Spanish (1982)

I mentioned the other day that Rolling Stone came out with its list of top 50 Goth songs of all time and clocked this “Heroes” cover in at #42, so I thought I might as well post it. I had never heard this — or heard of this, or this band before the Rolling Stone list.

The band is from Spain and performs the song in Spanish. To my listening, the words are not the highlight of this version, but rather the somewhat hypnotic drumming. Bowie’s original is many things, but it isn’t a dance song— this is.

Apparently, there was a “Madrid Scene” of experimental music in the early 1980s and these guys were at the forefront. Their first album included this song as well as a cover of The Stooges, “I Wanna Be Your Dog” (which Bowie has also covered). But the band was doomed after one of its members died in a car crash in 1983 (two other band members were injured).
