Mipso sings “Modern Love” (2022)

Who is Mipso, you ask? I never heard of this band either, but this is a very lovely rendition of, “Modern Love.”  The band comes out of North Carolina, though, as the video title indicates, this was filmed in Cologne, Germany,  This slowed down, acoustic version is quite beautiful but also highlights that the lyrics make little sense.  There are lines from the song that work on their own.  I once drove someone to her own wedding with this song on endless loop because of the line, “Get me to the church on time.”  Bowie himself would wave at the line, “I never wave bye-bye” (which doubly makes no sense because he just said…) During the pandemic shutdown, I saw a meme saying, “David Bowie knew when to go out and when to stay in” (lines that are missing from this rendition).  But put all the lines together and, as with many Bowie songs, you get words that contribute to an atmosphere rather than a linear narrative.

The atmosphere Bowie assigned to the song was one of a dance club.  This version is more coffee-house.  More contemplative and almost sad, Mipso makes the song seem really to be more about, “God and man.”  Anyway, this is a very nice cover of one of Bowie’s biggest hits,
