Marc Lowe’s “Breaking Glass”

Yesterday, I posted Marc Lowe’s video of his “Station to Station” cover and mentioned the possible connection between his reference to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life in that song and the line, “don’t look at the carpet; I drew something awful on it” in this song, “Breaking Glass.”

Bowie’s “Breaking Glass” is an odd, short song off the album Low. It manages to be both brief and oblique at once. Bowie chronicler Nicholas Pegg wrote of the song that it “etches out a sharp, disturbing portrait of a half-demented lover.” Marc Lowe picks up on that and acts out the part in the video.

I should acknowledge that one of the things I like about Marc’s Bowie covers is that all or most of them are accompanied by real videos. Marc doesn’t (usually) just record himself performing but produces real videos, complete with special effects, on-location shots, and Bowie-related imagery.

I should also mention that Nick Lowe references this song in, “I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass,” which I should feature on this blog one of these days. Lowe, Low, and Lowe. OK, there’s something going on here…
