Driven in Saturday Tuesday Movie Review, this time on Wednesday Part 2: The Expendables 4
Expendables 4 was the second feature at the drive in this past weekend. I have no specific memories of the previous Expendables movies, but I remember experiencing one before and while watching thinking to myself, “I know it isn’t the case, but this feels like the best movie ever.”
The conceit of the franchise is that there’s this commando team made up of over the hill action stars. The cast rotates to some extent but always at least includes Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Dolf Lundgren. They were back this time with several new supporting cast members including Megan Fox, who at 37 is, I guess supposed to be over the hill.
OK- on Megan Fox. I feel bad about writing this, but it is painful to look at her face. She seems like a living CGI effect. Between the plastic surgery (I hope it’s plastic surgery) and the heavy makeup that’s always on (when she wakes up, when she’s in combat— always)— it seems like she resides in the Uncanny Valley.
Anyway, that’s not enough to detract from the movie’s main feature…which is nonstop, violent action. Lots of blowing stuff up. And shooting stuff. And some stabbing mixed in. And punching. If this is what you’re looking for, you will get it!
If you are looking for anything else, you probably won’t get it.
I will say, without giving away any surprises, there’s a plot development in the story (which is saying something right there), that came off to me as genuinely surprising. I’ll leave it at that.
It is a forgettable movie, and as I mentioned yesterday, I dozed off at some point despite the 9:30 start time. But this was a whole lot more fun than the Mission Impossible movie from earlier in the year or any of the various supernatural movies. I’ll take it!
And I look forward to the Expendables 5.
OK, tomorrow I’ll get back to Bowie…
