Bowie cover of the week: Autumland performs “Space Oddity”

In this cover of the week feature, I typically highlight an unknown band (or at least a band that’s unknown to me) that very recently posted a Bowie cover. I have not only been impressed by the sheer number of bands that post Bowie covers on a weekly basis, but that most of them sound pretty good. This is yet another example, and allowing for the possibility that Autumland is a real band with a following posting a very informal video, it seems to me to be an example of how the most amateur of groups can find meaning in a Bowie song.

Autumland appears to be three guys in a living room. During the video, a pet dog decides to sit in on the session, and we briefly get a glimpse of the camera operator’s hand. Production value is zero. But the performance is solid. There’s nothing new about the arrangement, but the lead singer’s voice is distinctive and the instruments are different than what Bowie used on the version we all know.

Obviously, I only choose videos for this series that I like, and this one, yes, I like!
