Who is Karin Ann and what’s the Bowie connection?

Depending on what part of the world you are in, the question asked by the title of the blog post is not challenging. And, I’m guessing the same is true if you are reading this some months after the posting date. But for everyone else, Karin Ann is an indie-pop singer-songwriter, originally from Slovakia. Her critically acclaimed debut album, Through the Telescope, was released last year and a few weeks ago she released a cover of Bowie’s “Heroes.”

Well, “Heroes” is a fairly frequently covered song. That’s true. But what’s not typical is that Karin recorded it with a band featuring Bowie alumni — Everett Bradley on percussion, backing vocals, Sterling Campbell on drums, Gail Ann Dorsey on backing vocals, Henry Hey on the organ, Gerry Leonard on guitar, Donny McCaslin on saxophone and flute (yes, he plays flute, too), Catherine Russell on backing vocals and Mark Plati, who produced the piece, on bass, guitar, Mellotron, and backing vocals. They can all be seen doing their thing in an excellent video.

So where is the video and what’s this “I Don’t Believe in God” video? Well, I’m going to post “Heroes” tomorrow (how’s that for a tease?) and Karin will be joining me on Saturday for the new interview of the week!

I decided to post this video today because, after hearing Karin’s “Heroes” I started listening to more of her music, and watching her videos. Many of her videos are like mini-movies. In the interview, Karin mentioned that she’s working on her acting, and that comes through in this video. Plus, I have had the song stuck in my head, so now it’s your turn!

Come back tomorrow for Karin’s “Heroes” and come back Saturday for the interview. If you already know Karin Ann, I know you can’t wait. And if this is the first you’ve learned of her, well, buckle in— it will not be the last!
