RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto

I was embarrassed to admit that I didn’t recognize the name of Ryuichi Sakamoto when I began to see stories about his recent death, all the more so because most of those stories connected him to David Bowie. A pioneer in electronic music, I take it from what I have read in the past few days that Sakamoto’s innovative music influenced Bowie. Like Bowie, Sakamoto was also an actor, and the two starred together in the 1983 film, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. I have seen the movie only once, a long time ago and don’t remember much about it. But it turns out that Sakamoto not only acted in the movie but he, not Bowie did the soundtrack (among others, such as that of The Last Emperor, which I have seen many times). So there are many reasons I should be embarrassed not to have remembered who he was.
