RIP David Johansen

David Johansen, the frontman of the New York Dolls, passed away on February 28, 2025, at the age of 75. His band’s audacious style and sound were instrumental in shaping the glam rock movement that David Bowie both admired and propelled. Since this is a Bowie blog, this brief remembrance is written in the context of Johansen’s relationship with Bowie. Many of Bowie’s collaborators knew Johansen and are mourning the loss of a friend.

The New York Dolls were pioneers of proto-punk, blending raw rock energy with flamboyant fashion. Their influence resonated with Bowie, who saw in them a reflection of his own boundary-pushing artistry. Bowie made an oblique reference to the band in the 1973 song “Time.”
