Puddles Pity Party performs “Lazarus”

OK, so I wanted to post something related to Easter. So, “Lazarus…” also came back from the dead…even though the song doesn’t really seem to be about the Biblical Lazarus…and Easter isn’t about Lazarus…OK, ok. Do you have a better idea???

In looking for a version of “Lazarus” that I haven’t previously posted, I cam across this one by Puddles Pity Party. I had never heard of Puddles before, and based on the name and appearance wondered if this was a parody. It is not. To be clear— this is a great cover and an inspired video.

It turns out that Puddles is an accomplished Atlanta based performer. His act highlights his music, but apparently he’s multi-talented and, despite the total lack of humor in this video, does have a comedic element in his show. Puddles’ real name is Mike Geier, but these days he only appears in public as his sad clown character. There’s a fairly lengthy Wikioedia entry on Puddles, if you want to read more about him.

It is a total coincidence that Puddles looks like a counterpart to Bowie’s Pierrot clown character that appeared on the cover of the album, Scary Monster (and Super Creeps) as well as in the “Ashes to Ashes” video. That said, I think since Bowie paved the way, Puddles has a little more license. On a different level, a feature of many Bowie songs is the appearance of connections that really aren’t there. So we’ve got that going on here, too.

None of this has anything to do with Easter, but I’m glad the one thing led to the other and I found this video.
