Pretty much had to post this one again…

I typically don’t like to post the same video more than once in this blog, but I pretty much feel compelled to re-post Bowie’s bizarre Christmas duet with Bing Crosby today, and probably next year, too.

I’m not sure what’s to be said about this strange encounter. Bowie was a few years away from becoming a non-threatening, mainstream pop star. Bing Crosby was at the very end of his very long career— according to Wikipedia he is career kicked off in 1923. So from that time to Bowie’s last album in 2016, there was nearly a century’s worth of pop music coming together for this song.

While this duet has not quite attained the status of “White Christmas,” it has become part of the annual Christmas music cannon, not just for Bowie (or Bing) fans. It’s entirely possible that this is the most heard Bowie song for many who are not Bowie fans.

I doubt that Bowie would have joined the ranks of Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Aimee Mann and just about everyone else with making a genuine Christmas album, but who knows. As a fan of Christmas music, though, I would have liked it if he did.
