Exclusive Interview: Michael Dwyer of the Thin White Ukes!

Michael Dwyer is an acclaimed music writer and member of The Thin White Ukes, a Melbourne trio dedicated to reinterpreting David Bowie’s music— featuring the ukulele! If you haven’t heard the Ukes, find them on YouTube— actually, click HERE for their website where you can see some of their videos. They are unique and delightful reinterpretations of Bowie songs. As I mention in the interview, the name pulls you in, the ukuleles capture your attention, but the harmonies keep you wanting more. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve heard.

Michael has a rich background spanning over forty years in music journalism, contributing to major publications including Rolling Stone. Alongside his work with the Ukes, he’s worked as a broadcaster, lecturer, and commentator. In the band, Michael collaborates with Betty France and Robert Stephens to bring Bowie’s catalog to life through finely-tuned vocal harmonies and acoustic arrangements. Their attention to Bowie’s artistry is meticulous. Since 2015, they have performed all over Australia, New Zealand and as far afield as China. If you’re reading this from Australia and you’re a Bowie fan, you might well be familiar with the Ukes — if you’re not, you’re especially in for a treat.
