EgoB’s “Space Oddity”
Roeland Verhaeren, known as EgoB, is a Belgian musician inspired by David Bowie. He has made several Bowie covers, three of which he released last week, including “Space Oddity.” More of his work, including ambient electronic originals and commercial music, can be found on his website, which you can link to HERE.
I really like his “Space Oddity,” which I think shows off EgoB’s range of talents, especially his use of electronics and distortion. I’m not a musician, and I’m not exactly sure what he’s doing here, but to my ears, it sounds very creative and adds value.
“Space Oddity” is one of Bowie’s most-covered songs. During the course of the week, when I seek out Bowie covers for my “cover of the week” feature, “Space Oddity,” along with “‘Heroes’” and a few others, are so common that I have developed a prejudice against them. It isn’t that I don’t like the songs or really well-done covers of those songs, but I hear so many of them I usually look for an alternative option to feature. That said, I think what EgoB does here is different enough to stand out. Although I prefer the song choices of his two other recent covers, “We Are the Dead” and “Lady Grinning Soul” (both of which are rarely covered), the reasons I most like EgoB’s work are best displayed in this one, including his distinct video style.
Tomorrow, I’m going to feature another of EgoB’s covers with commentary from the artist himself. You won’t want to miss it!
