Day 57 | 87 And Cry
I thought of this song after hearing that Nancy Reagan passed away, and because I had recently heard it. A more appropriate song to mark a passing is Slip Away (“Out in Space it’s always 1982…”) but this song makes me think of the 80s and, while it isn’t the point of the song, how so many prominent figures from my high school years are passing away. 1987 was when I saw my first Bowie concert, my last pro-wrestling match, graduated from high school and went off to college. It is truly an indicator of middle age that I think about this stuff so much these days, but then someone like Nancy Reagan dies and makes it impossible not to. Album: Never Let Me Down.
Note from 8/13/22: The link to the original video stopped working, so I replaced it with the 2018 revised version of the song, featuring totally new instrumentals. It is a superior version. The original, while not exactly infamous, is not well regarded and sometimes mentioned as one of the lesser songs on one of Bowie’s lesser albums. The newer version is a vast improvement. Both versions use the same Bowie vocals, which suggest that he was on to something when he made the observation that the songs on Never Let Me Down were not bad, but the production was.
