Day 48 | The Buddha of Suburbia

At some point in the mid-1990s I learned that a new Bowie album was released in Europe but not in the United States. Thankfully by then the Internet was up and running and I obtained a copy from overseas and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t available here. Fortunately it is now. The Buddha of Suburbia is purportedly a soundtrack album for a British TV show that I have never seen. My understanding, though is that only a few of the songs on the album are actually used in the show. No matter, unlike the Labyrinth, Absolute Beginners or Baal soundtracks, it is an entire studio album of original Bowie material. This is the title track. Check out the reference near the end to Bowie’s earlier song, “All the Madmen” with the repeated line, “Zane, Zane, Zane, oeuvres le chien.” (No, I don’t know what it means in either song). Album: The Buddha of Suburbia
