Day 42 | Never Let Me Down

I was surprised to learn that this was Bowie’s last song to chart in the top 40 of the US Billboard Top 100 charts until Lazarus did late last year. Can that really be? So much great music came afterward, and frankly, while pleasant enough, this one isn’t great. It also isn’t completely awful. The problem with the album of the same name, which is generally regarded as a low point, is that the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Its parts are ok. They are nice. Not unlistenable. But with the possible exception of “Time Will Crawl,” which I’ll get to, none of the parts rise above that and the album as a whole seems like all filler. This song is a representative sample.
