Day 361 | Sacrifice Yourself

If there’s a theme to the first Tin Machine album it is a series of pretty direct warnings, against skinheads, crack, violent videos, and with this song, suicide.  In an odd way this is a counterbalance to the song I posted yesterday, “Tired of My Life” or, even more directly, “Rock & Roll Suicide,” which you may have noticed I haven’t posted yet.    Despite the title, this song is not pro-self sacrifice.  The refrain begins, “don’t sacrifice yourself.”  In this respect, the song is more reminiscent of “Cygnet Committee” which closes with a repeated cry of, “I (or we) want to live,” or the self-explanatory, “Lust for Life.”  Death was a regular theme for Bowie, from the early part of his career, but here Bowie comes down firmly against, if given the option.   Album: Tin Machine.
