Day 345 | Looking for Water

I’ve read that Bowie was inspired to write this song by the idea of soldiers who invaded a desert for oil only to end up searching for water in order to survive. I don’t see that in the lyrics. It sounds more like one of Bowie’s post-apocalyptic songs, describing a world like that in Cormack McCarthy’s “The Road,” where edible food is sparse. The song also brings to mind “Glass Spider,” which has repeated references to water being all gone. That too is song that paints a picture of a fantastic landscape, though it’s hard to tell if Bowie meant there to be a link. Album: Reality
