Day 334 | She’ll Drive the Big Car

This song, about a woman dissatisfied with her settled and routine life (I think) is pretty typical for the album it comes from. When Reality was released I thought of it as sort of a lesser follow-up to Heathen, but with time I have come to appreciate it for its unique qualities (I had the same reaction to The Next Day- it struck me at first as Reality Part 2). I feel very comfortable with the album on in the background and songs like this are why. The only downside is that the song is so comfortable that I haven’t spent as much time contemplating it as other songs. One of the interesting things about doing this tribute exercise has been spending a little more time with some of these songs than I have previously- this one in particular deserves attention. I get a sense that it is really a meditation in middle age dissatisfaction…something I know nothing about!!! One note about the video- after performing this song, Bowie says he will spend the rest of the concert singing glam songs, then he rattles off a bunch of glam bands before settling on David Bowie, then he does “Modern Love,” which is a kind of in-joke because it isn’t one of his glam era songs. Album: Reality
