Day 281 | A Small Plot of Land
This is one of Bowie’s most intense songs. The words to describe it are driving, ominous and paranoid. It starts slow and builds toward something. It is a lament, but while we can discern meaning in phrases like “poor dunce” and “poor soul,” many of the other words are gibberish. So what the song is doing is trying to make sense of an impending disaster that makes no sense. It isn’t a finger-snapping, feel-good hit, but it is one of the reasons I like the album. Album: 1.
