Day 248 | Criminal World

This is one of Bowie’s lesser known songs from one of his better known albums.  To the extent you think of it, you probably didn’t realize that it is a cover, originally recorded by a band called Metro.    I only recently learned that the original Metro version had slightly different lyrics that were vaguely gay-themed and suggestive enough to get banned from some radio play.  Bowie, at a point in his career when he was trying to purge his image of bisexuality, neutered the song, but may have intended to send a secret message to those who knew the original version.   In any case, the song sounds good and not specific to Bowie’s phase at the moment (it is hard to imagine the song on an earlier Bowie album but easy to imagine it on almost any that came later, with a few exceptions).  Album: Let’s Dance
