Day 207 | Shooter Jennings and Marilyn Manson cover Cat People (Putting Out Fire)
This is the third Bowie tribute cover I have posted in three days and it is definitely the weirdest of the set. I was not previously familiar with Shooter Jennings and Marilyn Manson is not my favorite. Manson did an album a few years ago called Mechanical Animals that was supposedly Bowie-influenced, so I bought it and just didn’t hear it. This is a straight up cover (I haven’t posted the original Bowie version…I’ll do that later). I like Bowie’s version much better- in fact it is one of my favorite of his from the 80s, but what makes this version truly interesting is the strange animated video, which kind of tells the Cat People story and includes fleeting appearances of cartoon David Bowie and at least one other Bowie reference. This is also the kind of song that doesn’t make Bowie greatest hit compilations unless you get past 20 or so songs, but everyone knows this one. “Oh yeah, he did the Cat People song too… ” Album: Countach (For Giorgio) (Shooter Jennings)
