Bowie released this version of his mid-70’s hit as a promotion for his Sound and Vision greatest hits tour. The tour was his mainstream re-introduction after a few years in Tin Machine. I saw Bowie on this tour in Hartford during the summer I was working on my first gubernatorial campaign—Bill Cibes for Connecticut Governor (thus Hartford). Fame was not the highlight of the show—for me the most memorable songs were Gloria, Pretty Pink Rose and Panic in Detroit. When Bowie broke into the latter, the random guy sitting next to me and I had a moment, like we couldn’t believe we were there. Two things of note about this video—alongside the clips of earlier Bowie videos, look for the clips from the movie “Pretty Woman,” which used it in the soundtrack. Also, my favorite part is Bowie’s feigned surprise in the beginning—nobody did as feigned surprise expression like Bowie. Album: Pretty Woman Soundtrack.
