This is another song that made its album feel like it was really about 9/11, although it is more a coincidence of timing. It really establishes the sense that something consequential, and probably very bad, just happened establishing a paradox that both of paradigm shift and business as usual: “Everything has changed; for in truth, it’s the beginning of nothing; and nothing has changed.” Bowie likes to resurrect words and phrases from song to song and sometimes suggest different meanings of those words. He does that here with “change.” The line, “nothing has changed” is the title of what I believe to be Bowie’s last greatest hits compilation, which in addition to obviously coming from this song is also a reference to his better known song, “Changes,” and the series of compilation albums, “Changesonebowie;” Changestwobowie” and Changesbowie.” Album: Heathen
