David Bowie Cover of the Week: Duo Nice Price covers “The Man Who Sold the World”
I have developed a slight prejudice against covers of “The Man Who Sold the World” in large part because it is one of the most frequent Bowie covers I come across during my process of evaluating covers of the week (also, in part because some identify it as a Nirvana cover). This is unfair to the song. I liked this version enough to break through my mental barrier to feature it this week.
Samo Turk does a good job on guitar and vocals, but what sets this version apart for me is the substitution of a sax for the lead guitar. I can find little about Duo Nice Price beyond what’s on Eric Kramberger’s social media, and unless I’m missing it, I don’t see Turk’s name in the video description. Through hunting around online, I think the guitarist is Samo Turk. In any case, Kramberger’s sax makes this a distinctive live version.
From what I can piece together, Erik Kramberger is a Slovenian singer, saxophonist, and guitarist who performs both as a solo artist and as a member of Duo Nice Price. Videos posted online document performances in a variety of small venues and feature a repertoire drawn from rock, pop, and singer-songwriter music.
Duo Nice Price is an acoustic act that performs covers of well-known songs by artists including David Bowie, Sting, Queen, and Amy Winehouse. Recordings available online show the duo performing in clubs, bars, and other intimate settings, with arrangements centered on vocals and guitar.
Kramberger maintains an online presence through video-sharing platforms where performances by both Duo Nice Price and his solo projects can be found.
