“Heroes” is one of Bowie’s most covered songs. Not unlike Springsteen’s, “Born in the USA,” the song is sometimes rolled out to express something that isn’t actually in the song. The song isn’t really about heroes. It isn’t even really optimistic. The lyrics are actually straightforward, as Bowie lyrics go. The song is about doomed and desperate lovers who are entertaining the possibility of allowing themselves to fantasize for a single day that they can be hero’s, king and queen and in an altogether different place than they find themselves to be. If you think about it, the song is actually depressing. Anyway, David Byrne joined the long list of musicians who covered the song, and he performs it faithfully here. It’s nice to hear.
