Bowie cover of the week: Honeysuckle performs “Space Oddity”

This one picked itself: as you will notice, the opening frames of this video label it “cover of the month.” I’m a little unclear what that exactly means, but for purposes of this blog, it is the Bowie Cover of the Week.

The performance is pretty straightforward, at least in terms of the musical presentation of “Space Oddity.” But I have to give the band extra credit for dressing up as astronauts, and — hey— a lot of those band members look awfully similar! Well, Honeysuckle actually has two members, Holly McGarry and Chris Bloniarz, and that’s multiple images of Bloniarz playing different instruments on the song. So, I’m going to say that this video is a little more creative than most.

I will say that while the performance of this much-beloved song is great, what the band knows about it is a little off. The little blurb that accompanies the video implies that “Space Oddity” comes out of the Ziggy era, which is not accurate (Bowie released the song three years prior to Ziggy). They might have been confused by a version of the Space Oddity album cover featuring an image of Bowie as Ziggy, but that wasn’t the original cover.
