A David Bowie “America” Playlist

OK, here are 10 America-related songs recorded by Bowie for the 4th of July.I will be writing next week about my experience on this holiday…

1. “America,” by Simon and Garfunkel. Performed at the Concert for New York in 2021.

2. “I’m Afraid of Americans,” 1997 from Earthling

3. “This is Not America,” 1985, recorded for The Falcon and the Snowman soundtrack. This purports to be the official video. It features clips from the movie, however Bowie does not appear.

4. “Young Americans,” 1975, from Young Americans.

5. “I’ll Take You there,” 2013 from The Next Day Extra. Sadly, as far as I know, there is no footage of Bowie performing this song, so this is audio only.

6. “Panic in Detroit,” 1973 from Aladdin Sane. So-so footage of him preforming the song in 1997.

7. “New York’s in Love,” 1987 from Never Let Me Down. Audio only, but this is from the 2018 version for which musical colleagues of Bowie rearranged and re-recorded the instrumental parts of the song.

8. “Dancing in the Streets,” 1985. Recorded with Mick Jager in relation to Live Aid.

9. “Day In, Day Out,” 1987, from Never Let Me Down. “First thing she learns is she’s a citizen; Some things they turn out right when you’re under the USA…” It goes downhill from there.

10. “New Killer Star,” 2003 from Reality. “See the great white scar over Battery Park…” Bowie’s most on-point post 9/11 song.
